STEM WEEK 2024

At Woodnook this week, we have been doing lots of different STEM (Science Technolody Engineering Maths) activities throughout school.

Our focus has been 'Space'.

In EYFS and Key Stage One, we have been using Space stories as a stimulus for our activities: making craters on the moon, making rockets and thinking about ways to protect astronauts when they try to land their buggy on the moon!

In Key Stage Two, we have been using a green screen to pretend we're in space, making an astronaut lander, a solar system mobile and a scaled drawing of the solar systems.

The children have had an amazing time being scientists, engineers and mathematicians!

At the end of STEM week, we were visited by Steven the 'rocket man', who works for Starchasers and has built real rockets that go into space! He brought a range of things for KS1 to explore, a real rocket that had been launched and the equipment to help KS2 build and launch their own rockets.

Year Five The Road to RIAT Day

Year Five took part in this competition to design a sustainable aircraft and think creatively about air and space.

The competition was generously supported by Accenture and run in partnership with The Smallpeice Trust and RAF Youth STEM.

The challenge was to design a sustainable plane, so we needed to creative, design and can work in teams.

By competing, students learn about aerospace, sustainability and literally see their creativity take flight.

Year Five and  Six Tree Planting with Prospect Foundation

Year Five and Six went to the area behind the housing on Belfield Road to plant a range of native trees to encourage wildlife to visit.  They had a fantastic day and got very wet and muddy!

Woodnook Science Day 2023

We carried out a range of scientific investigations during our Science Day.  Each class had a workshop with Sublime Science, where we took part in astounding chemistry and physics investigations!  Some classes made slime, others investigated reversible and irreversible reactions.  The day ended with the whole school out in the yard, where our Sublime Scientist created rockets with lemonade and sweets!
